Don’t take them off!
30 March 2020Sometimes parents ask us whether Mitchell shoes can be cleaned. Our answer is: Of course! Find out how to do it properly!
Compared to the Denis Browne leather shoes, Mitchell sandals can be washed in a washing machine. This is an extremely practical feature — it not only keeps the shoes looking clean and neat but also ensures proper hygiene. For new shoes, washing them before the first use is recommended, as it helps soften and slightly loosen the material, making them more comfortable for the child.
When washing Mitchell shoes, remember that:
- Do not wash them too often – frequent washing can make them lose their shape and stiffness, which are crucial for keeping the foot properly positioned inside. The material can also start to pill and thin out. Wash them only when it’s really necessary.
- They can be washed at 30°C only.
- Do not spin-dry at high speed.
- Do not tumble dry – this will cause the shoes to lose their shape.
- Place the shoes in a soft laundry bag designed for washing shoes/sandals/boots (see photos) or in a regular pillowcase – this prevents damage to the plastic parts, buckles, and also to your washing machine.
- Do not use strong detergents, such as bleach.
- Before washing, loosely fasten the straps and thread the ends through the buckles (don’t leave them loose).
- Add other laundry of a similar, non-bleeding color to balance the load and prevent the shoes from hitting the drum – even if they’re in a pillowcase. However, don’t include delicate items like tights or shirts, as the shoes could damage the fabric.
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Loosely fasten the straps and thread their ends through the buckles.

2.
Place the shoes in a shoe laundry bag or a pillowcase to protect them during washing.

3.
Set the washing machine to a gentle cycle, make sure the water temperature does not exceed 30°C (86°F), and set the spin speed to a maximum of 800 rpm.
Add a mild detergent and fabric softener, or wash without any detergents at all.

4.
Add some extra laundry in similar, non-bleeding colors to balance the load and prevent the shoes from banging around inside the washing machine drum.

5.
After washing, unfasten the straps, gently stretch and straighten them. Then dry the Mitchell shoes in a well-ventilated, dry place — either on a drying rack (with the straps facing down – see photo) or hung on a drying wheel as shown in the photo.
This helps prevent the material from stretching or losing its shape. In summer, you can dry them outdoors in the sun. In winter, you can use a hair dryer on a warm, gentle airflow (not hot air!) to speed up drying. Do not use a tumble dryer – it will cause the shoes to lose their shape, stiffen, twist the straps, and can even damage the dryer itself.

AS YOU CAN SEE, IT IS COMPLETELY EASY!
KEEP THE MITCHELL BOOTS CLEAN!
